Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in New York with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico. The movements of salsa have its origins in Cuban Son, Cha cha cha, Mambo and other dance forms, and the dance, along with the salsa music originated in the mid-1970s in New York.

Salsa Styles

The most popular salsa styles practiced in Amsterdam (and in the Netherlands in general) are Cuban and LA.

Cuban style is generally more relaxed and spontaneous. The dancers seem to react more to the change in music and rhythm, and incorporate some Afro Cuban elements. LA style looks more spectacular thanks to its many figures such as spins and dips.
